Pendragon Academy is a family-friendly dance school in Spring, Texas / Klein, Texas. Known for our superior ballet classes, kid-friendly hip hop classes, toddler dance, and contemporary jazz, we have a class for virtually everyone. We teach all levels, beginner to advanced, ages 2 to adult in ballet, pointe, jazz, tap, hip hop, contemporary, and lyrical. Skilled and professional instructors have degrees in dance and real world training on stage and backstage. We use interactive teaching techniques involving the whole brain and body that get results quicker than normal in a safe and FUN way! Parents love our spacious facility with free wi-fi access, playroom for siblings, healthy snack bar, and cold drinks!Pendragon Dance Company is an award-winning competitive dance company of 5 teams in all levels and ages four to eighteen. Our dancers take an accelerated learning track through the academy, which advances their dance skills and gives them opportunities that young dance stars need to become professional dancers! Our dance team members have received the top awards at every dance competition we have attended for the last four years of existence, as well as Top Score Overall National Championship status in 2009 and 2011. We are proud to host Pendragon Dance Company at Pendragon Academy of the Performing Arts.We hold an annual, full costumed, professionally staged spring concert, featuring every class, a company showcase, and a spring performance finale. We hold Nutcracker performances during the holiday season for ages 3 to adults! Auditions for the Nutcracker are held in mid August each year. Class Guide

Beginning Combo

BTC: Ballet/Tap/Creative
BTC teaches the foundations of dance movements by introducing the student to important ballet and tap steps with a creative element that helps with memory retention. BTC is perfect for little ones who have had no experience or very little dance training. It's a great way to get your child's feet wet with his/her first dance class.

2nd Year Combo

BTJ: Ballet/Tap/Jazz
BTJ is a combo class for children ages 6 to 8, who have very little dance training (or the previous year in a BTC class). BTJ teaches the basics of ballet, jazz, and tap, and prepares the student for challenging leveled classes in the future (such as Ballet I or Jazz/Tap I).

Serious Beginners

Leveled Classes I & II
Leveled classes in Ballet, Jazz, Tap, and Hip Hop are available for serious students who want to become better dancers and performers! Level I classes are beginning level, ideal for first time dancers or those coming from a combo class. Level II classes are a bit more intensive, ideal for 2nd year dancers or those coming from Level I.

Advanced

Intermediate to Advanced
Level III, IV, and V classes are reserved for more advanced dancers who have been in a dance class for more than 2 years. Level III Ballet is a pre-pointe class that prepares ladies for pointe in the future and guys for partnering work. Level III Jazz/Lyrical is considered intermediate level work in all types of jazz including lyrical and contemporary styles. Levels IV and V Ballet are Pointe & Partnering classes for dedicated dancers who attend multiple classes each week. Level IV/V Jazz & Lyrical are advanced technique classes that help prepare the student for competitive events and/or a career in dance.

Nutcracker 2011 is here!

Come see our 5th annual production of the Nutcracker on December 17th (2pm or 7pm) at the Woodlands College Park Auditorium, a spacious, state-of-the-art stage! Elaborate costumes, sets, and props; performers of all ages from tiny mice to seasoned snowflakes, eager to share with you the passion of dance! BE ENCHANTED! DIRECTOR

STAFF
Laney Atherton has an extensive background in the dance industry as well as valuable training in management of retail and service businesses. Laney was raised by two successful business owners. While growing up, her father owned a health food store and café in New Mexico, and her mother owned a celebrity fitness studio in the River Oaks. Both businesses prepared her for life as an entrepreneur beginning at a very young age.Laney has excelled in the business world as a manager for retail and service companies. She has a strong love for teaching dance, and a passion for producing elaborate productions.She has had over 23 years of training in classical and modern ballet, Pointe, jazz, tap, musical theater, and lyrical as well as related training in gymnastics, acting, and visual arts. She has danced with esteemed Houston dance companies and international super houses such as Moscow Ballet, & Kirov Ballet. She competed in advanced dance and acting competitions for many years always scoring in the top, overall percentiles as both a soloist and team competitor. Laney became an apprentice dance teacher at the young age of 16. Just two years later, she was appointed as Artistic Director for Ballet New Mexico and directed her first full-length production for the prestigious Spencer Theater in New Mexico.Laney went on to teach and direct for several award-winning dance companies, she taught private lessons, and choreographed commercially under the name she made for herself. She has directed numerous stage productions since her first debut.Laney attended the College of William and Mary in Virginia, where she continued her professional training in advanced dance while pursuing an Honors Neuroscience degree and holding positions on student organization boards. In Virginia, she also directed City Arts Dance Company and founded the Children's Ballet of Newport News. She helped restructure and promote the city government's non-profit dance & outreach programs, and choreographed commercially for area events and businesses. City Arts doubled in company enrollment just 6 months after Laney became the director. The company won numerous "top score overall" awards throughout the region, and Laney received the award for “Most Outstanding Teacher” at the Virginia Region I Love Dance competition in 2006. The award was given for her demonstrated dedication to her students and for bringing the largest number of dancers to the competition.Laney returned to her hometown of Houston, Texas in early 2007. She purchased the Louetta location of Koenig School of Dance in May of 2008, and renamed the school Pendragon Academy.Ms. Laney directs the Pendragon Dance Company competitive dance teams, our elaborate performances, and she also teaches weekly classes in Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Contemporary, and Pointe.
Marquita Hurd, our office manager, holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Dance and a minor in Biology. Marquita began dancing seriously during her freshman year at Westfield HS when she became a member of the Lariettes Dance Team. She worked her way up as a Junior dance officer to Senior 1st Lieutenant. Her love for dance grew each year, and she made the decision to further her dance education when she attended Stephen F. Austin State University. SFA is where she received formal training in dance and where she found her love for teaching it. She was a member the Repertory Dance Company at SFA for 4 years which provided the opportunity to perform on stage, travel, and learn about dance production. Marquita has trained extensively in Ballet, Modern, Jazz, Hip Hop, Pom Pom, Latin American Dance, and Improvisation. In addition to her dance training, Marquita has 7 years of choreography experience. She has helped choreograph routines for Westfield HS, several concerts for SFA's dance program, and her own "Burdens of Chaos" that premiered at SFA in fall 2006. Marquita completed her Internship at Nacogdoches HS and student teaching at Klein HS where she experienced working with students of different learning abilities and dancing levels. She has danced for the Texas Copperheads, Houston's own arena football team, where she danced and cheered professionally. In addition to her dance degree, Ms. Marquita also holds a Texas teaching certification for K-12.Ms. Marquita currently co-directs our dance teams, teaches Hip Hop, Jazz, Ballet, Drill Prep, Modern, Contemporary & combo classes, and she is our very organized office manager. She has been teaching at Pendragon since our first year, and she is adored by all of her students! Katie McMann is a recent graduate of Sam Houston State University where she received a bachelor of fine arts degree in Dance. She also has extensive training in vocal and acting skills, videography, photo and music editing. She has choreographed several pieces for public performance at SHSU , and she has performed in numerous performances as a professional dancer. Miss Katie teaches some of our toddler, BTJ, and hip hop classes, where she engages the students in an adventure of dance and fun! Gillean Wade has received a bachelor of science degree in Dance from Lamar University where she was the assistant to the director during her senior year. She has a passion for teaching young children, and grew up in a family childcare business. She has been an instructor for the Girl Scouts dance team, Green Starlettes, and owned a recreational dance school in the past. Ms. Gillean teaches some of our toddler and BTJ classes. Jessie Smyczek is an advanced dancer with many years of training in classical ballet, pointe, jazz, and tap. She has been a member of our senior dance team 2009-2011, and has competed and performed at regional and national events for many years before her involvement with Pendragon. Jessie has performed soloist roles in various ballets including her most recent role of the Sugar Plum Fairy for the last two consecutive years. Jessie has also competed in local and national pageant competitions, scoring Overall Top Talent and Overall Pageant Queen. In addition to her many years of training, she went through our Assistant Teacher training program for two years before becoming a professional teacher for us. Her students adore her, and we are thrilled to have her talent as part of our team!Marissa Roman is an advanced dancer as well. She has many years of dance training in classical ballet, jazz, and lyrical. She has danced on our advanced senior team, and completed training in teaching toddler classes at Pendragon. She assists with rehearsals, combo classes, and demonstrations. Marissa debuts as the Sugar Plum Fairy in December 2011.Corinne Bochinno currently attends Arizona State University where she is pursuing a dance degree. She teaches seasonally when available. She received a scholarship from Dean Simon Dove for her talent in dance, and has been cast in several graduate pieces and film work. She has studied a wide variety of dance skills in unique genres such as Argentinean, Rakshariki, Barhata, and West African. Before college she studied dance for many years and participated in competitive dance teams as a teenager. She teaches our high powered jazz and tap classes in all levels. Ms. Corinne has a true love for dancing and teaching that you will notice from the moment you meet her!Support StaffRobin Steinmetz is our front desk assistant, who is happy to help you with any questions, registration, and performance related information during our office hours. Robin danced for many years at an advanced level, alongside our director growing up!Caitlan Heasley is an advanced ballet dancer who is familar with our academy on both a personal and business level! Caitlan was our front desk assistant in 2010, and is now attending college. She helps out seasonally when available and also edits our dancer's photos. Jim Atherton can be found backstage at our performances. Jim is a life-long dance parent himself, as the director's father! He has extensive backstage experience, and has been instrumental in past Nutcracker performances.

COMPANY INVOLVEMENT

Dancers on our competitive teams enjoy a more serious dance training experience to gain valuable performance and tournament opportunities. Participation is by audition and casting in May. If you are interested in auditioning for company, let your regular ballet or jazz teacher know or you can email the director, laney_pendragonacademy.com.

We look for students who are easy to work with, take critique well, work hard, attend more than one class per week, have good flexibility and poise, and whose parents have good payment records and treat other parents and staff with kindness. Teams are divided by age and level and vary with each year.

We have a ZERO tolerance policy for gossip and slander. Company members and parents are held to a very high standard, expected to work together in teams and as a company, and focus on personal improvement rather than "winning" against other teams. We have a tight-nit group that enjoy spending time together at conventions and special events. Company members make life-long memories and friends, while opening doors to a career in the performing arts and overall life enrichment!
